The Matterhorn straddles two countries, Switzerland and Italy. The oldest person to climb the Matterhorn was mountain guide Ulrich Inderbinen at the age of 90. On the first ascent in 1865, Edward Whymper is alleged to have unsportingly shouted at his rival Italian team from the top and hurled rocks 1,250 meters below as the Italians turned and fled.
